Doomsday Prepper Has Guns Taken Away By Judge

David SartiOnly days after being featured on the National Geographic TV Show Doomsday Preppers, a prepper from Tennessee named David Sarti has been declared Mentally Defective and his guns have been seized by the government. David became famous in the survival/prepper community for his Youtube videos back in 2007-2008. His videos sometimes ranged on the odd and quirky, but never Mentally Defective!

David has become a target for those in government who see preppers as a target. He is being made an example of what happens to preppers and we should not stand for this. Yes, Nat Geo’s show is made to make preppers look crazy. And no, I would never go on it myself. Every time I watch it I think how brave/crazy these people must be to go on national tv and show their preps to everyone and explain all their security plans in detail. Are they so caught up in being a star or “informing the sheeple” that they forget their own OPSEC?

I feel for David and I wish there was something I could do to reverse this ruling. It is not fair, it is wrong, he is being made an example and everyone who is a prepper should be very, very worried. Learn from this. Keep your preps under tight OPSEC or you may become the target of liberals and gun haters like David was.

Support David in what he does. He’s a good man. His video’s are informative and helpful. Subscribe to his Youtube channel and show your support.

“During an emergency a man should be able to leave his home with nothing more than the clothing on his back and feel like he left nothing behind” – Thoreau

That’s one of my favorite quotes and Les nails it right on the head in his documentary “Off Grid with Les Stroud”.  It’s a really cool series of videos on youtube featuring Les Stroud (Survivor Man) and his family as they move off the grid. You can definitely learn a thing or two by watching these videos. It is Les Stroud after all. :)

Saving Rice For Long Term Food Storage

Rice is one of the great wonder foods. While rice alone cannot keep you alive it should be an important part of your survival stores, especially if you’re on a budget. A 10lb bag of rice is full of carbs and is cheaper than dirt. It’s like a 10lb bag of energy! White rice is all starch (carbs) and metabolically equivalent to potatoes, white bread, pasta, flour and even raw sugar.  Starches are not completely digested by our bodies and the undigestible carbohydrates are not just neutral bulking agents, but have important physiologic effects, and contribute energy to the diet.

mylar bags in 5-gallon buckets

“Sugar” is not bad for your health, and starches are not all equal in their effects on blood glucose and lipids, but some studies have linked eating large amounts of white rice to an increased risk of diabities. This is why it’s still important to vary your diet and your food stores. You don’t just eat rice every day now do you? So don’t just stockpile rice but also lentils, corns, wheats, pastas, and beans. And while brown rice may be more nutritious avoid storing it as the fats and oils in the husks will go rancid fairly quickly. Brown rice stored in mylar bags inside 5 gallon bucks with o2 absorbers stores about 6 months, whereas white rice stores roughly 20+ years in the same mylar bags.

I’m often asked how much rice does a person need for one year. Th easiest way t0 figure this is to determine how many cups rice you want to eat every day and then divide that by how many cups there are in a pound of rice. For most people with a varied stockpile of food 1/2 cup of rice per day is enough. Most people balk at this idea and end up throwing money away on unneeded food “just in case”.

Remember thes are your emergency food stores, and not intended to be a feast. Your food stores are temporary and only intended to get you through until another sustainable food source can be found, such as a garden, so they should be eaten sparingly. In future posts I will talk more about this but for now just know that 1,500-2,000 calories/day will get you by just fine and that 1/2 cup of rice is about 300 calories. Mixed with other foods such as beans and wheat this will round out your new diet nicely. There are roughly five servings of 1/2 cup  in 1lb of rice. This means for every 1lb of rice you have 5 days of stored food so by doing some simple math you can see that 73lbs of rice will last one person an entire year and a family of 4 will need about 300lbs of rice.

You should buy buy your white rice in bulk 50lbs bags to save money. Large warehouse chains like Costco and Sams Club always have plenty of 50lb bags laying around. You can also try your local asian marketplace. Storing your white rice is just as important as buying it in the first place.

Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need:

  1. Several food grade 5-gallon buckets. Each bucket will hold roughly 35 lbs of rice.
  2. 5-gallon mylar bags
  3. Oxygen absorber packets (1,000 cc a piece)
  4. Bag sealer (or just an iron)

Clean your buckets and dry them thoroughly. Place a mylar bag inside one of the buckets. Put a 1,000 cc O2 absorber in the bottom of the mylar bag. Slowly pour your rice into the mylar bag, lifting up and down on it as you pour to ensure all the cracks and crevices are filled in. Once the bag is full (leave a 1-2″ airgap from the top of the bucket) add another 1,000 cc O2 absorber.  Squeeze all the air out of the top of the bag and either use a clam shell sealer or an iron to seal your mylar bag. Snap your lid on your bucket and store it in a cool, dry place.

Here is a great set of videos that guide you step by step through the entire process. These are some of the best how-to mylar storage videos on the internet, watch them closely and you’ll learn alot!

Building A Better Mouse Trap For Survival

Mouse traps are one of the most overlooked but essential survival tools. Maybe it’s so overlooked because no one really wants to think about eating a rat. The truth is in SHTF anything goes, and a rat trap (homemade or store bought) can be used to catch alot more than common mice. Depending on the bait you use you can catch snakes, rabbits, squirrels, opossums, armadillos, racoons, and even birds. Mouse traps are also vitally important for keeping  your food stores clean and rodent free. If you don’t want to eat them at least use them for bait for bigger animals.

Mouse TrapThe Common Man’s Trap

The easiest way is to buy a couple of the large Wooden Rat Snap Traps from amazon or home depot. To give yourself the most variety of meat make sure you buy the large traps and not the small ones made for mice only. Drill a hole in one corner large enough to run about a 10′ section of Paracord through and tie it up. Secure the other end of the paracord to a tree or post, apply a small dab of bait on the trap, camouflage it the best you can, and set it. A trap like this will work for you while you do something else, like tend your fire or collect water.

Different types of animals like different types of baits. The best all around bait is peanut butter. You can catch mice, rats, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and armadillos with peanut butter. A small piece of meat or fish will also work wonders for opossum, racoons, and armadillo’s and even turtles. Some grass, seeds and berries will attract rabbits and birds. Snakes are a bit finicky but can be caught. If you hate the thought of eating a mouse then try catching one and setting it as bait for another animal such as a snake or coon.

A note on eating armadillo meat. They have been shown to spread leprosy to humans so eat with caution. The armadillo may have no outward signs of leprosy and still spread it to humans. The same can be said for eating racoon meat. They are know carriers of rabies so you have to be careful and make sure you cook your meat thoroughly. I would not eat an armadillo or racoon unless I had no choice. But if it’s either eat or starve then you’re better off taking your chances and eating the dang thing.

DIY Mouse Trap

No Traps? No Problem!

If you don’t have a mouse trap then you can improvise. All you can really catch are mice but it’s very simple to build. All you need is a 5 gallon bucket, a piece of wood to act as a ramp (optionally you can bury the bucket flush with the ground), some peanut butter, a 1 liter bottle or aluminum can, and some wire.

Run a legnth of wire through an aluminum can and attach each end of the wire to the top of the bucket. Smear peanut butter on the can and fill the bucket with about 3-4″ of water. Then either bury the bucket flush with the ground or prop a piece of wood against the bucket to act as a ramp for the mice. The mice will come in to get the peanut butter then fall in the water and drown. It’s simple and very effective.

You can catch one to two mice a day with such a trap if you set it up in the right place. Around food stores, in attics, and around grassy fields are great places.

Don’t Take My Word For It

Here’s a great video from Dave Canterbury of http://www.wildernessoutfittersarchery.com (you probably also know him from the hit show Dual Survival) explaining how he always carries two large mouse traps with him, or as he likes to call them “common man traps”.

Ultimate Survival Deluxe Tool Kit

Ultimate Survival Deluxe Tool Kit

I have seen a ton of different survival kits on the market, and most of them are total crap. Just a few china-made items threw together in a container with the word “survival” slapped on it for marketing. Anyone who has ever bought a pre-made kit online knows what I am talking about. How many times have you bought a cool looking kit, only to find out that what you bought was completely worthless in any real survival situation. Well that’s not the case with the Ultimate Survival Deluxe Survival Kit.

Recently, I started carrying the Ultimate Survival Deluxe Survival Kit by Ultimate Survival Technologies in my EDC (every day carry).  While I haven’t threw my homemade kit out the door yet, this deluxe survival kit is definitely a great addition to anyones gear and is well worth the money. It’s major selling point for me was the ability to get a fire going in just about any conditions you can imagine.

What’s Included:

  • Blast Match Fire Starter: The blast match is amazing. The sparks it makes are 3 times hotter that a regular match. It can also be used with just one hand and is a lot easier to use than a standard magnesium fire tool.
  • Wet Fire Tinder: This stuff can be used to start a fire even in the rain. It even burns while floating in water!
  • Star Flash Signal Mirror: The mirror that comes with the kit is great. It’s extremely durable and can be used to signal from distances. The Star Flash signal mirror is even used by the U.S. Air Force.
  • Jet Scream Whistle: One word: LOUD!! This whistle is extremely loud and is great for signaling.
  • Saber Cut Saw: A really cool addition to any survival kit is this flexible hand chain saw. This is one of the better “rope saws” out there and I highly recommend it.

But don’t take my word for it, watch this video and decide if the Ultimate Survival Deluxe Survival Kit is right for you.

Smoke bombs are great for signalling if you are in distress or need a quickly concealed getaway. This video shows you how to make high volume smoke with ingredients you can find at your local Wal-Mart and eBay. If you’re lost in the woods and spot a rescue plane a smoke bomb can save your life!

Ingredients:
60g KN03 (Potassium Nitrate)
40g Pure Cane Sugar
2tbs Corn Syrup
1tbs Water
2″ Visco Fuse
1 teaspoon Baking Soda (optional, makes the smoke bomb flameless)

Tools Needed:
Gram Scale
Mortar & Pestle (or some way to grind and mix everything, NO BLENDERS!)
Knife
Wire Cutters (Scissors)

*NOTE: Making and using smoke grenades can be dangerous. Use at your own risk.
